Hey there!
I’m in Japan for two performances at the Greenroom Festival in Yokohama this weekend, and I’m soooo excited to play!
Traveling to other countries to perform has always been a dream of mine, but it’s sometimes difficult to do if the funding isn’t there to help cover flights, hotel rooms, car/van/equipment rental, insurance, blah blah blah - especially for ‘small fries’ like me who usually have to play in smaller clubs and bars.
Luckily I’m able to make this trip to Japan happen because I was invited by a big festival promoter, but I’m hoping to travel to some other countries this summer as well – YAY!
Every now and then, it’s hard to convince club bookers in other countries that I have a big enough audience in their city to make it worth their while to have me play. However, a new service might be able to help with this. Hooray for technology!
The folks behind Songkick (which you can use to track bands you like that are coming through town) just launched a new service called “Detour” that I’d like to try out - but I need your help to do it!
The first city they’re looking to bring bands to is London (…Mmmm …Beans and eggs!!!!! YUM!)
Here’s how it works: You sign up for a Songkick Detour account (it takes like 2 seconds). Then, you pledge to buy a ticket to my hypothetical show in London (you can even pick the price you’d be willing to pay for the ticket). Then, once enough people in the London area have done this, Songkick Detour goes to the concert promoters and says, “See? Meiko has lots of fans in London willing to come to the show, and they’ve already pledged to buy tickets! You should book her!”
Even though Songkick asks for it up front, your credit card doesn’t get charged until a show is actually booked in London, so there are no worries there.
Then, once I get to London (and after I have a proper English fry up), I can maybe book some more shows in surrounding cities and turn it into a little tour!
I hope you can help me with this little experiment. If you could tell your friends in the London area about it, too, that would be awesome.
